In this, the fourth novel of the Eye of Providence series, Ruben Smith is retired and living with his wife Honey on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. After a career as a Special Operations Officer for the CIA, the peace that he's carved out for himself is suddenly overturned when Inspector Mallárd of the Charlotte Amalie police returns the JFK assassination Documents to Smith. "Bodies of old people are washing ashore," Mallárd informs Smith. These are the remains of witnesses to the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas. "Impossible," says Smith. But they, along with the enemies of the current president of the United States, have been imprisoned on a Caribbean island called Paradise Cay. One of the prisoners turns out to be the vice president's daughter, Emily Nance, who is jailed for her political opposition to the president. Smith seeks to rescue her just as Honey's life is threatened by an Island gangster named Jackson Fredericks, known as "Mr. Barbecue." THE CULT OF MAGICAL THINKING is a story of recovery, of accepting the truth about the past, and about beating the odds while sailing among the picturesque isles of the Lesser Antilles and visiting the tropical haunts of St. Thomas. Once again, Smith and his allies pit themselves against the malevolent powers that are taking the country down the dark road of fascism.
