There is, I believe, no incident of American history that has been made the subject of more research, investigation, and speculation than the battle of Little Big Horn, which was the culmination of Custer's career, and in which he and his men reached the end of the trail. Hundreds - indeed thousands - of books, pamphlets, magazine articles and newspaper stories have been written about it; some of them good, more of them bad, and still more indifferent. And the end is not yet. One of the few, indeed the very few things of which competent students of Custer's last campaign are agreed, is that the most important repository of information concerning it is in the Official Record of the Court of Inquiry convened in Chicago in 1879 at Major Reno's request to investigate his conduct at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, The record was not accessible to the public until 1951. It is the details in the record that make it possible to understand and control other accounts emanating from the Indians and the surviving members of the 7th Calvary. It is the purpose of this volume to present under one cover a representative selection of these accounts.
