Excerpt from Jess
Just then his cogitations were interrupted, for on the farther side Of a gentle slope there suddenly appeared an extraordinary sight. Over the crest Of the rise of land, now some four or five hundred yards away, a pony with a lady on its back came wildly galloping, and after it, with wings spread and outstretched neck, a huge cock ostrich was Speeding along, covering twelve or fifteen feet at every stride Of its long legs. The pony was still twen ty yards ahead of the bird, and coming towards John rapidly, but strive as it would it could not distance the swiftest thing on all the earth. Five seconds passed - the great bird was close alongside now Ah! And John Niel turned Sick and Shut his eyes as he rode, for he saw the ostrich's thick leg fly high into the air and then sweep down like a leaded bludgeon.'

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is set in the untamed landscapes of the Transvaal Republic, South Africa, in the early days following the Zulu Wars. Captain John Niel, a former British Army officer, arrives to begin a new life as a farmer on the remote Mooifontein homestead. There, he joins forces with Old Silas Croft, a veteran settler, and his two nieces, Bessie and Jess. While Bessie embodies the spirited and pragmatic frontierswoman, Jess is an enigma, a woman of quiet intelligence and hidden depths, masked by an aloof exterior. The novel delves into the stark beauty of the African veldt, the complexities of colonial life, and the clash between British and Boer cultures. It explores themes of love and loss, identity and belonging, through a cast of vivid and authentic characters. The author's deep understanding of the era and its social dynamics shines through, offering a rich tapestry of human experience and a poignant meditation on the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity.
