Excerpt from The Problems of Philosophy
There is a current opinion that personal ity and scientific research are antagonistic. Hence, on the one hand, the student would fain doff his personality when he thinks scientifically; and, on the other, he lives as if scientific methods and results had no significance for the freer side of his per sonal development. I myself, in my youth, swore allegiance to such a View, under the overpowering influence of S. Kierkegaard. If I have finally broken its hold on me, I venture to say that that is because I have become better acquainted with both science and the personal life.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This philosophical compendium explores the fundamental problems and concepts that have captivated thinkers since the dawn of philosophy. The author analyzes the interconnected nature of these problems, arguing that they stem from the relationship between continuity and discontinuity in human experience. Examining the psychological realm, the author challenges the notion that consciousness is a mere collection of isolated elements. Instead, they propose a holistic view, emphasizing the dynamic interplay of elements and their role in shaping the continuous and coherent experience of self. The text also delves into the complex relationship between mind and matter, scrutinizing the hypothesis that consciousness arises from material causes. The author carefully weighs the arguments for and against this hypothesis, highlighting the enigmatic nature of the mind-body connection. Delving further into the philosophical landscape, the author interrogates the principles of knowledge, highlighting the tension between rationalism and empiricism. The concept of causality is also subjected to scrutiny, as the author investigates the nature and limits of scientific explanation. Ultimately, the author argues that these philosophical problems are not merely abstract musings but have profound implications for our understanding of ourselves, our place in the world, and the nature of reality itself. By shedding light on these enduring questions, this book provides a valuable contribution to the advancement of philosophical thought and human understanding.
