Excerpt from The Chess Player, Vol. 1
Chess are before us; we might almost venture to say that it is incumbent upon all to aid in exploring them. In combination we must seek the golden treasure; and our little book will, we trust, be the guide to lead us through the mazes of uncertainty. Already one kind contributor has anticipated our views, and sent us an elaborate and praiseworthy analysis of the Evans' gambit, which we shall insert in an early number, and of which we shall treat in the second volume, and therein give our own views, as well as those of our fellow-labourers who may be disposed to send us their criticisms. In conclusion, it gives us great satisfaction to find that the labours we havebestowed on the Chess Studies have been so fully appre ciated by our readers, whose opinions coincide with ours as to their importance to the scientific amateur, and for that reason they hold a prominent place in each number. For the Problems and Games we are much obliged to those gentlemen whose names are attached.
