Excerpt from Mr. Hoyle's Game of Chess: Including His Chess Lectures, With Selections From Other Amateurs

Few people in England, till within these thirty years, understood playing the pawns to perfection: the lovers of Chess are principally indebted to Sir Abraham Janssen, Mr. Montgomery, and Mr. Bofan, for this knowledge; and it is on the playing the pawns well, in a great measure, the success of the game depends.

You have some new cases in this treatise absolutely necessary to understand, in order to play the game to perfection. The author, a keen observer of the game's evolution, traces its history from its origins in ancient India to its development across Persia and Arabia, before arriving in Europe. The book particularly emphasizes the importance of pawn play, a strategy that the author attributes to the influence of prominent chess figures like Sir Abraham Jansen, Mr. Montgomery, and Mr. Bot'an. The text explores specific strategies and techniques, including the complex gambit openings, and examines the relative values of different pieces within the game. The author provides detailed rules and tactical advice, designed to guide both beginners and experienced players alike, while also offering intriguing anecdotes about notable chess players throughout history. The book delves beyond the purely tactical, presenting insightful observations on the game's strategic and moral dimensions, mirroring the work of Dr. Benjamin Franklin who saw chess as a metaphor for life, a game of strategy, foresight, and perseverance.
