Excerpt from A Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms: To Which Is Prefixed an Introduction to the Elements of Music
That a few months after the publication of the "Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms" a Second Edition was already called for could not but be gratifying to the Author, and spur him on to improve his work as much as he was able. The Second Edition which I now lay before the public differs from the First by a complementary Appendix, by a few corrections of misprints, and by some additions to and emendations of the original matter. I shall take advantage of this opportunity, and say a word or two about the plan of the work. This explanation of my intention will at the same time serve as a direction to the reader how to use the "Concise Dictionary." My chief endeavour in writing the book was to give the most exact information in the fewest possible words. I prefixed an "Introduction to the Elements of Music" to the "Concise Dictionary" because this enabled me to refer in many short articles to complete expositions of the branches of musical theory in question, and thus to avoid, on the one hand, repetitions and, on the other hand, obscurity and fragmentariness. The length of some articles as compared with that of others may at first sight appear excessive, but, I think, a closer examination will show that the importance of the subjects or the haziness of the knowledge that prevails about them justifies the apparent disproportion.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of music theory, offering a comprehensive guide to understanding the fundamental elements of music. Beginning with the basic question, "What is music?" the author explores various perspectives on music as an art form and a science. The discussion moves on to the material of music, covering concepts such as pitch, intensity, and timbre, and how these elements are represented in written notation. The book then delves into the complexities of scales, keys, intervals, and chords, providing clear explanations and illustrations to aid comprehension. Further chapters explore the value of notes and rests, time signatures, and different types of musical accents. The author also delves into the concept of time in music, discussing tempo markings and the use of the metronome. The book concludes with a section on musical forms, focusing on the structure of periods and their subdivisions, key relationships, and thematic work. The analysis of Mozart's Sonata in C minor serves as a practical illustration of these concepts. By exploring the theoretical foundations of music, this book provides valuable insights for musicians, students, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the language of music.
