Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: First Year Course
The sign of multiplication (x) is often replaced in algebra by a dot (e), which is written above the line to distinguish it from a decimal point. Thus3 °4means3 4.
The product of two numbers, one or both of which are' represented by letters, is usually indicated by writing the numbers one after the other without any Sign between them. Thus ab means a x b or a b, 4 c means 4 x e or 4 C.
When only one of two numbers is represented by a letter, it is custom ary to write the letter last. Thus we write 4 c, but not 0 4.
