The writer of these papers sends them forth well aware of their limitations. Written for the most part as lectures, they have the inherent faults of such work - faults that all revision could not have wholly eradicated had such revi sion, indeed, been deemed advisable. Nor does he claim any particular originality in material or method of treatment; to do so in the face of the work of more competent and scholarly writers, to whom he owes a debt quite beyond repay ment, would be manifest supererogation. He will have sufiiciently attained his object, how ever, if he has put in a more or less popular and accessible form facts about certain men and movements that have had transcendent influence upon the art and culture of the modern times.
