This book is a detailed study of the effective range theory expansion of k cot n(L) for a potential which asymptotically approaches a constant times 1/r to the n power. The authors find that for n greater than or equal to 5, such an expansion does not exist. For n equal to 4, they find that the expansion breaks down at a term that depends upon L. For n equal to 1, they find that the usual shape independent approximation is not useful, even for L equal to 0. The authors develop an expansion of k cot n(0) about zero energy that contains a number of terms not present in the usual effective range theory, including a term linear in k. The authors also obtain the leading terms in the expansion of k2 cot n(L) for L not equal to 0. The analysis is very much simplified by the existence of known mathematical solutions, Mathieu functions, of the Schroedinger equation with V(r) equal to a constant times r to the minus 4 power.
