Lawrence A. Wilkins' First Spanish Book, first published in 1919, is a textbook from which teachers instructing Spanish as a foreign language can work from. As its name implies, this textbook is intended to serve as a learner's introduction to the Spanish language. This is clearly a book for beginners. More experienced Spanish speakers would likely gain little from using this text.
The book purports to not use a single "method" of teaching Spanish, but rather an amalgamation of various accepted methods. It should be noted that the pronunciation and vocabulary taught within is what is sometimes referred to Castilian Spanish - that is, the variety of Spanish spoken in Spain and other European countries.
It is unlikely that any teacher would refer to a Spanish textbook published in 1919 while teaching a formal Spanish class. However, the information presented within is still extremely valuable. From the perspective of a Spanish language learner, this book achieves its goal. It is concise yet thorough, and provides insight into pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and context. For the extremely keen independent learner, the book also provides activities that can be completed to practice the material taught within. It is certainly nice to be provided with recommended activities to improve your skills.
The book concludes with a vocabulary section, which is essentially a brief Spanish - English dictionary. While far from complete, it does contain the most commonly used words in Spanish, and is a valuable tool for the beginner.
