The author, an expert on irrigation, spent the winter of 1901-2 in Egypt studying canals, dams, and other irrigation infrastructure, as well as the country's irrigation laws and regulations. He focuses on the engineering marvels that have enabled Egypt to support such a large population and pay the interest on a national debt half the size of Americaâs from the returns on agriculture alone. However, the author also emphasizes that American farmers have both the economic ability necessary for the management of irrigation works and the experience in business and political affairs needed for the successful operation of irrigation systems under private ownership. Describing the tools, dams, and canals of Egypt, the author shows how these differ from those in the United States and explains how, despite vast differences in irrigation techniques, American irrigation systems can still learn from their ancient Egyptian counterparts.
