However an author may feel as to details, he is in the main bound by the consensus of Opinion as thus expressed. The purely topical method, the attempt to exhaust a subject like common fractions in a single chapter, is now Obsolete in our leading schools, while the extreme spiral method is scrappy, uninteresting, and lacking in the continuity SO essential to thoroughness. Between these two comes the best type of our modern courses Of study, somewhat Spiral in arrangement, in that most subjects extend over several terms, but admitting of a topical arrangement within any one term, thus securing thoroughness and maintaining an interest.
