Excerpt from The Formation of the New Testament
About fourteen years ago, while a student in Union Theological Seminary, I began a study of the ante-nicene Fathers, with a view to discover ing the forces and aims that caused the Christian Church to form a New Testament. I submitted an essay at that time, for which I was awarded the prize in New Testament Introduction. A few years later I read a paper on the same sub ject before the American Society of Church His tory. While a pastor in New Haven I did some work in the library of Yale University, especially on the fragments of Heracleon's Commentary of John, preserved for us by Origen, on the ground of authority underlying the Christianity of Clement of Alexandria, and on several other subjects closely related to this discussion.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. An exploration of the religious and philosophical forces that shaped the creation of the New Testament, revealing the gradual emergence of a closed canon and examining the reasons for the exclusion of certain books. The author argues that the formation of the New Testament was not a straightforward process, but rather a complex interplay of theological, ecclesiastical, and political factors. The book delves into the early Christian belief in a continuing stream of revelation, the rise of a speculative approach to Scripture, and the role of episcopal authority in determining which books were deemed authoritative. Through meticulous analysis of patristic literature, the author sheds light on the criteria used for inclusion and exclusion, highlighting the tension between those who sought a universal inspiration of believers and those who advocated the confinement of inspiration to the bishops. This book contributes to our understanding of the historical development of Christianity, offering valuable insights into the formation of its foundational text.
