The appointment to deliver the Mutter Lectures of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia for 1900 induced me to give increased attention to the operative correction of facial deformities. This sub ject had long interested me, and seemed an appropriate topic for the lectureship established by Thomas D. Mfitter, the Philadelphia teacher, who had played such an important part in the early history of plastic surgery.
