Excerpt from The Problem of Parliament: A Criticism and a Remedy
As we have said, the problem of abolishing poverty is, in our opinion, the problem of finding the right government; and we shall endeavour in this little book to sum up the case for Socialism as the only remedy and a Socialist government as the only effective method of action. We believe, above all, in the necessity for putting all efforts into the form of an effective political campaign among the electors, to convert them to Socialism; and against the present inefficient legislators and administra tors, to defeat them. A political programme, and sound political action, we consider the main line of practical advance. We shall endeavour to show how political programmes and actions of the past have been futile, how Toryism and Radicalism have failed, and how Trade Unionism and Labourism have been unable to do all they hoped. We shall then state the case for Socialism, and a Socialist Party to put it into practice. We want, in brief, to give a summary of what Socialism is in theory and as a practical programme; and further, and perhaps more urgently, to link this theory and this programme to the immediate question of the tactics which Socialists should pursue at the present time. Socialism in theory and practice, is the scope of our book.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the pressing issues of poverty and social inequality in Britain, offering a critical analysis of the existing political landscape and its limitations in addressing these problems. The author explores the failures of both Liberal and Conservative governments in enacting meaningful reforms, arguing that their policies have consistently prioritized the interests of the wealthy elite over the needs of the majority. The book then turns its attention to the rise of Trade Unionism as a potential alternative, examining its historical development and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the author contends that Trade Unionism, while an important step forward, ultimately falls short of providing a comprehensive solution due to its reliance on self-help and its inability to fundamentally challenge the power structures of capitalism. Drawing on a deep understanding of historical and economic realities, the author ultimately presents Socialism as the most effective path to achieving social justice and a more equitable distribution of wealth. The book offers a compelling argument for the nationalization of land and capital, asserting that only through collective ownership can the rampant inequalities of the current system be overcome. The book's insightful analysis of the limitations of traditional political and economic models provides a powerful call for a fundamental reimagining of how society is governed.
