Excerpt from Scientific Method in the Reconstruction of Ninth-Grade Mathematics
This monograph, however, has been written with a conviction that it is possible to reconstruct secondary mathematics from the ground up in a sound and scientific fashion. Our first chapter, only, is given over to painting a picture of the present status of things - to stating the indictment - the remaining ones contain the evidence. No comments have been made about the recon struction of ninth-grade mathematics which do not rest upon the accumulation of quantitative evidence. This, in turn, is supported and checked at every step by a careful application of present-day psychology.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a detailed review of historical and current practices for teaching mathematics in American high schools, with a particular focus on ninth grade algebra. The author provides an overview of some of the criticisms made of ninth grade algebra education, including that it is predominantly theoretical with little real-world application and that it is not structured in a way that encourages students to think through problems. The book provides a historical perspective on how the ninth grade algebra curriculum developed in the United States, suggesting that the current curriculum is not as effective as it could be because it is based on this outdated model. The book includes specific suggestions for how to reorganize ninth grade algebra instruction, including using timed assignments to increase fluency in specific skills and changing the order of topics to focus on reasoning skills.
