Excerpt from The Health of the Skin
T is a common delusion to imagine that the skin is a simple membrane or covering drawn over the muscles and bones of the body and of very little importance as compared with the nerves and blood vessels, to say nothing of such organs as the liver and lungs for instance. The truth is that the Skin is a vital, complicated structure. In its develop ment from the fertilized human egg, it may be first noted that the skin arises from the same layers of cells in the embryo as the brain, Spinal cord and nerves generally. Indeed the skin is a wonderful fan-like expansion directly connected with the central nervous system, and is like the eye and ear an organ of sense, viz. The sense of touch.
