Excerpt from Cyrilla, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale
This house was built by Rudolph Baron von Walden auf Waldenburg in the seventeenth cen tury, and since repaired, altered, and enlarged, by his successors at different periods; which interesting facts were recorded on stones inserted in the walls, that no subsequent yellow, green, or whitewashing of the mansion had ever been suffered to conceal or deface. It was asserted, with every appearance of probability, that the buildings used as stables had been erected by the Romans, and that perhaps treasure, certainly antiquities, might be found, if judicious and determined search were made in the yard and its vicinity.

This book tells the story of the von Walden family through the eyes of Baroness Olga von Adlerkron as she navigates the changing social and political environment of mid-1800s Austria. As the last of the Adlerkron-Windhorst line, Rupert, the baroness's nephew plans to repurchase the family estate originally sold by his grandfather. To do so, he agrees to his aunt's plan to marry one of his cousins in order to gain access to his inheritance. However, he becomes aware that the money may not be rightfully his, which sparks a journey of self-discovery and a quest to understand his family history. The author delves into the complexities of inheritance, the complexities of family dynamics, and the influence of history and tradition on our choices. Through the baroness, readers see how choices made in the past can reverberate for generations and the ways in which we can become ensnared by power and money when we fail to challenge traditional expectations. Ultimately, this book is about how the past can both haunt and inspire us and the importance of challenging the status quo.
