Excerpt from Essays on Religious Conceptions
These essays have been written in a profound, and undoubting, Belief in the Dispensation of Christianity, as given to us in the pages of the New Testament.
The Belief is neither superficial, nor formal, nor conventional, but based on a lifelong study, not only of the New Testament, but of the Sacred Books of all other Religious Conceptions of Ancient days, and the Modern Religious Conceptions, which have sprung into existence in this century. In 1894, I published an Essay on the Ancient Religious Conceptions of the World before the great Anno Domini, and in 1897 I published an Essay on the Modern Religious Conceptions of the World, not in the usual style of prejudiced abuse, but a dispassionate and impartial description, as of a matter of Abstract Science, where Truth only is sought.
