Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Homonyms: Pronouncing and Explanatory
This unassuming little work contains a collection of English words, very similar in sound but differently spelled, and conveying different meanings, which are generally known under the name of Homonyms.
Collections of Homonyms are certainly found in almost all elementary English school books, but they are.generally too concise. It has therefore been thought necessary to give to the subject a fuller development, without omitting the introduction of a certain number of words considered antiquated or obsolete, but which are nevertheless freely used in common speech, in order to better enable students of the English language to grapple with the difficulty presented by Homonymous words, especially in writing under dictation.
It is, moreover, obvious that the translation into French and Italian of every English Homonym, as contained in the text, will prove of considerable help, especially to foreigners studying the English language.
