The object of the following work is too dearly stated in the title page to require explanation. In furtherance of that object I have sometimes felt myself called upon to criticize the opinions of other writers. On those occasions I have done so with freedom, but I trust also without offence; for it were absurd to suppose that I do not feel respect for the intellectual and moral character of many persons, whose ideas on abstruse and speculative questions are at variance with mine. Errors emanating from men of acknowledged merit most require exposure, because they are the most contagious.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a historical survey of the development of geological science through the 1800s. It addresses the debates over the origin of geological features, such as whether they emerged from deposition or crystallization, and the then-new concept that the earth's surface had been shaped over vast periods of time, rather than by one substantial event like Noah's flood, as was commonly believed at the time. The author traces the evolution of geological ideas through the work of prominent geologists. This book presents a detailed analysis of the history of geological thought and its implications on our understanding of the earth's history.
