Chief organ of the movement up to 1856, and the purely naturalistic views therein advocated found general favour. Rumours Of the trance utterances of A. J. Davis and of Cahagnet's somnambules had, however, reached this country, and at least one English somnambule, Emma, the subject of Dr. Haddock, had seen visions of a future life and of spiritual things not unlike those recorded of Adele Maginot.2 Neither Haddock himself, nor Gregory, who discusses the visions and compares them with those recorded by Cahagnet,3 is prepared to accept the clairvoyant utterances as authentic revelations; but neither, on the other hand, is willing to dismiss them as unquestionably subjective. That Haddock's own mind was not made up on the subject he frankly confesses; and the mere fact that he thinks it worth while to devote several pages of his book to the account of these ecstatic visions clearly indicates that he set some value on such records. But, at any rate, if some of the English Mesmerists in the early fifties held it an Open question whether such clairvoyant utterances had any reference to objective realities, there was as yet no school or sect, as in America and Germany, to adopt without hesitation the spiritualistic interpretation of these and kindred phenomena. It was not, indeed, until 1853 that the new doctrine Obtained.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intriguing history of spiritualism in 19th-century England, a period marked by a fascination with the supernatural and the rise of various spiritual practices. The author meticulously traces the origins and evolution of spiritualism, exploring its connections to earlier movements like animal magnetism and mesmerism. The narrative unfolds through a series of captivating episodes, beginning with the arrival of American mediums who introduced table-turning and spirit communication to English audiences. The author examines the diverse reactions to these phenomena, from skepticism and ridicule to fervent belief and even accusations of satanic influence. Central to the book's exploration is the role of mediums, both professional and amateur, in shaping the spiritualist movement. The author delves into the psychology of mediumship, examining the various explanations offered for the observed phenomena, including unconscious muscular action, fraud, and the possibility of genuine psychic abilities. The text also explores the influence of prominent figures like Robert Owen, whose conversion to spiritualism lent credence to the movement's claims. Ultimately, this book offers a nuanced and thought-provoking examination of spiritualism's impact on Victorian society, shedding light on the complex interplay between belief, science, and the human desire to connect with the unseen world. By exploring the historical roots and diverse manifestations of spiritualism, the author invites readers to contemplate the enduring questions surrounding the nature of reality and the possibility of communication with the spirit realm.
