I am glad that you are to publish a new edition of the Abbé Bautain's the art OF extempore speaking, for the reason that it is the best book on the subject that I have ever read, and that it is not a catch-penny publication, but a thoughtful work based on important experience by an eminent scholar who was one of the most eminent extemporaneous preachers of modern times in France.

Excerpt from The Art of Extempore Speaking Extempore

It was our privilege to sit at the feet of Dr. Andrew D. White, former president of Cornell University, minister to Russia and Germany and President of the first International Peace Conference at the Hague, and listen to an effective address delivered to students on the subject of extemporaneous speaking. Dr. White earnestly urged all who were preparing for American life to study Abbe Bautain's "Art of Extempore Speak."

Students lost no time in jotting down the name of the book.

In an attempt to obtain the work we found it was out of print. It occurred to us that if so eminent a man as Dr. White, who had made public speaking a study, and who never lost an opportunity when in France of listening to the eloquent Abbes, whose order required them to speak without notes, recommended so strongly Abbe Bautain's book, a republication of the work would be good news to thousands of preachers, teachers, laymen and attorneys throughout the English speaking world.

Upon making known our intention to Dr. White we received a communication from him which appears as the Foreword to this edition.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the art of extemporaneous speaking, a skill highly valued in a society where effective communication holds immense power. Rooted in the historical context of classical education and drawing inspiration from renowned orators and thinkers like Quintilian and Cicero, the author emphasizes the significance of this ability in various spheres of life, from the pulpit and the classroom to the courtroom and the political arena. The author explores the fundamental elements that contribute to successful extemporaneous speaking. Natural aptitudes such as a lively sensibility, a keen intelligence, and a strong will are considered essential foundations. However, the book goes beyond innate talent, delving into acquired skills that can be honed through dedicated study and practice. The reader is guided through the process of crafting a well-structured plan, developing logical connections between ideas, and harnessing the power of imagination to deliver impactful speeches. Central to the book's philosophy is the concept that true eloquence originates from a deep understanding of the subject matter and a genuine desire to share knowledge and inspire others. The author distinguishes between the superficial charm of rhetoric and the authentic power of oratory that stems from the heart and resonates with the audience. By emphasizing the importance of preparation, clarity of thought, and a passionate delivery, this book offers invaluable insights that empower individuals to master the art of extemporaneous speaking and leave a lasting impact on their listeners.
