Excerpt from The Merry Devil of Edmonton: A Comedy
After Drayton we have nothing but bare conjecture. Hazlitt thought it was more likely to be by Thomas Heywood than by any other writer; but though it bears a general resemblance to the spirit and tone of Heywood, it would be rash in the extreme to ascribe the play to him without more definite reasons than have ever yet been adduced.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an anonymized early modern English comedy belonging to a genre of theatrical plays that lampooned perceived social ills of the period. Written during the Elizabethan or Jacobean era, it reflects the literary trends and societal preoccupations of the time. The play humorously follows the antics of Peter Fabel, a scholar and conjurer, as he engages in a battle of wits with Coreb, a demon who has ensnared him. Fabel outwits the demon, gaining seven more years to walk the earth. The author explores themes of good versus evil, the power of knowledge, and the human capacity for trickery. Through a cast of vividly drawn characters, this book's insights into the complexities of morality resonate with readers even to this day.
