In this and some succeeding notes I propose to restate (sometimes in a more general or precise form) some of Du. Bois-reymond's simplest and most striking results, to give simpler proofs of some of them, and to illustrate them by means of particular integrals which are interesting in them selves and can be evaluated either exactly or asymptotically. Some of the more difficult results can only be proved by more elaborate methods.
