At the same time, I have attempted, in planning and executing the work, to contribute in some small degree towards placing the study of education on a secure basis. The great majority of English books on the subject are either frankly empirical or frankly psychological. The merest glance at these pages will show that it would ill become me to speak slightingly of the excellent work that has been done in the first of these directions. But the final word cannot rest with the empiricists. It remains for professed students of education to gather up, to harmonise, and to present in systematic form, the lessons of experience.
