Excerpt from History of the United States
AT the beginning of the year 1814, the attitude of New England pleased no one, and perhaps annoyed most the New England people themselves, who were conscious of showing neither dignity, power, courage, nor intelligence. Nearly one half the people of the five New England States supported the war, but were paralyzed by the other half, which opposed it. Of the peace party, one half wished to stop the war, but was paralyzed by the other half, which threatened to desert their leaders at the first overt act of treason. In this dead-lock every one was dissatisfied, but no one seemed disposed to yield.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the second administration of James Madison. The War of 1812 rages on, causing social and economic hardship in New England. As a result, New Englanders voice dissatisfaction with the war and consider seceding from the United States. The author places this event within the broader context of the evolution of New England's political identity and sentiments, which had been shifting away from the Union throughout the war. The secession movement does not gain traction, and ultimately New England remains part of the United States. The narrative highlights the complex motivations behind New England's actions, exploring themes of regionalism, sectionalism, and the limits of national unity during a time of crisis, drawing from historical documents and analysis to provide insights into the motivations of New Englanders during this era.
