Excerpt from Major Social Problems
Everything is in the hands of Jehovah - crops, health, long life, birth and death. If a good thing befell the people, the credit belonged to him; if misfortune came, they had sinned by disobedience and idolatry. The Hebrew could not move without being guided by his god, who even giveth his beloved sleep. This attitude has survived in the Puritans to this day, and the long list of evils mentioned in church litanies with the petition: Good Lord, deliver us, furnishes ample testimony that the same attitude still survives elsewhere.
