Excerpt from On the Penitentiary System in the United States, and Its Application in France: With an Appendix on Penal Colonies, and Also Statistical Notes
An article on the Pennsylvania penitentiary system will be found at the end of the volume. It was originally written by the translator for the Encyclolmedz'a flmerz'cana, who appended it, with some additions, to this work, called upon to do so by some gentlemen, to whose knowledge in matters of prison discipline he owes great deference. The circumstance that the writer of the article speaks upon some subjects connected with Solitary con finement from personal experience,* so unusual with those who are, called upon to discuss a subject of this nature publicly, had undoubtedly influenced their partial request.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of the American penitentiary system, exploring its origins and development in the early 19th century. The author, a keen observer of American institutions, provides a detailed account of the two main models of prison disciplineââ âthe Pennsylvania system of solitary confinement and the Auburn system, which emphasized silence and labor. The author meticulously examines the philosophical underpinnings of each system, exploring the competing ideas of moral reform and deterrence as well as the practical challenges of implementing these ambitious approaches. The book further explores the role of women in the criminal justice system, highlighting the disparity in crime rates between men and women and the unique challenges of reforming female offenders. The author also raises important questions about the effectiveness of different punishment strategies, including the use of corporal punishment, and argues that a more humane and effective system requires not only the confinement of criminals but also their moral rehabilitation. Ultimately, this book provides a compelling and insightful analysis of the early American penitentiary system, offering a glimpse into the evolving conceptions of punishment, justice, and the very nature of human reform.
