Excerpt from The History of Modern Music: A Course of Lectures Delivered at the Royal Institution of Great Britain
The volume prefaced by the foregoing has been out of print about ten years, during which such' increasingly frequent calls for copies of it have been made that, more pressing occupation preventing the preparation of a new edition, I have many times been on the point of sanctioning a reprint of the old one. I cannot but rejoice at not having done this. A course of six Lectures only, no one of which was to exceed an hour in delivery, on a subject so extended as the History of Modern Music was inevitably a very incomplete cour'se. Moreover the trenchant brevity with which many questions were of necessity treated in it resulted, as I have since found, in false impressions of my Opinions in respect to them.
