Excerpt from The Steam Engine Considered as a Thermodynamic Machine: A Treatise on the of Steam Engines; Illustrated by Diagrams, Tables, and Examples From Practice
The present volume originated in some rough notes on the thermo dynamics of the steam engine, drawn up as long ago as 1871, for the use of students of engineering and others interested in steam engines. These notes, having proved useful, were expanded into a complete treatise published in December 1877, which was intended to serve as an introduction to applied thermodynamics, While at the same time an attempt was made to study, more completely than had hitherto been done, the process of the conversion of heat into work in steam engines.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fundamental principles underlying the operation of steam engines, examining the intricate relationship between heat and work. The author begins by establishing the connection between pressure and temperature in steam, referencing the groundbreaking experiments of Regnault. These experiments provided crucial data for understanding the elastic force of steam at various temperatures. The book also explores the concepts of total and latent heat of evaporation, which are essential for quantifying the energy required to transform water into steam. The author presents a comprehensive analysis of the density of steam, drawing on both experimental and theoretical methods. Notably, the book discusses the phenomenon of partial evaporation and superheating, highlighting the importance of considering steam conditions beyond the dry and saturated state. Overall, this book provides a thorough investigation of the physical properties of steam, offering valuable insights into the thermodynamics of steam engines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
