MY duties compel me to spend many hours in the train. In this way some forty or fifty hours in every month are occupied. These hours are opportunities of reading and writing. The papers gathered into the present volume are, generally speaking, the product of these railroad hours. From the nature of the case they are only fugi tive studies, now brought together in deference to the kind wishes of others, who have read them in magazine form or who have heard the substance of some of them in lectures.
