Excerpt from A Short Introduction to Graphical Algebra
The lines Y 0 Y are usually drawn horizontally and vertically they are taken as lines of reference and are known as the axis of X and y respectively. The point 0 is called the origin. Values of x are measured from 0 along the axis of 37, according to some convenient Scale of measurement, and are called abscissae, positive values being drawn to the right of 0 along 0x, and negative values to the left Of 0 along ox'.
Values of g are drawn (on the same scale) parallel to the axis of g, from the ends of the corresponding abscissae, and are called ordinates. These are positive when drawn above X'X, negative when drawn below X'X.
