Excerpt from The Outlines of Educational Psychology: An Introduction to the Science of Education
The practice of education has had a similar his tory. We have had some great teachers in the past, but none of them has understood much of the real nature of what he was doing. If the great teachers themselves have known little of the nature of the material with which they dealt or the causes of their success, much less could their followers know. They could only imitate, with next to no knowledge of the principles which underlay their master's success. Systems of education have, for the most part, been based on some philosophical or religious conception. It is not correct to say that these systems have all been wrong; there has been, perhaps, some truth in all of them, just as there has been a grain Of truth in most systems of philosophy. For example, some of Plato's ideas on education as expressed in the Re public can now be scientifically justified.
