Excerpt from The Last Decade of European History and the Great War: "Designed as Supplement to He Development of Modern Europe," "an Introduction to the History of Western Europe"
At the close of the nineteenth century England was, to all appearances, as conservative as any nation in western Europe. The enthusiasm for the extension of the suffrage and for the reform of ancient abuses, which had stirred the country for a hundred years, seemed to have died away. Contentment with the existing order, and interest in great enterprises in South Africa and other parts of the world, characterized English poli tics. From 1886 to 1906 (except for a short period in 1892 189 5) the Conservative (or Unionist 2) party was in control of the House of Commons and the government. Liberalism appeared to be dead, and the agitation of the socialists appar ently made no impression on the workingmen.

III. The opening years of the twentieth century have witnessed a steady increase in the peoples' control of their governments. The House of Lords in England has been forced to admit that the final word in lawmaking rests with the House of Commons; the monarchy has been overthrown in Portugal; Turkey has tried to establish a constitution and a parliament; China, having overturned the imperial administration, has founded a republic; and Russia has dethroned the Tsar.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the political landscape at the turn of the 20th century as the nations of Europe emerged from a century of peace. This time of political reform brought about new developments and changes, including the decline of the House of Lords, the rise of the Labour Party, the empowerment of women through the suffrage movement, and an overall democratization of many nations. The volume also describes the state of affairs in Britain, Portugal, Turkey, and China, as well as the evolution of conflict in the Ottoman Empire and the complex events leading up to the Great War of 1914, highlighting the increasing tensions over imperialism and the unresolved issues in the Balkans. The book concludes by examining the early 20th-century socialist and labor movements and the simultaneous growth of militarism, with the rise of conscription armies and the naval arms race between Britain and Germany.
