Excerpt from Advanced Ear Training and Sight Singing
The study of Harmony generally consists of writing notes, mathematically calculated from a figured bass, without hearing their sound or understanding their use and bearing upon playing or singing. A musician must be able to read and hear written music as readily as he reads his mother tongue. The purpose of this book is to show the pupil how to study and apply Har mony, to develop the ability to hear what is written and to furnish exercises for study. Each Lesson is divided into three Sections: Section A contains the exercises for written work, applying Harmony to Melodic Construction and Harmoniza tion, and the study of Form; Section B, the exercises for Harmonic, Interval and Melodic Dictation; Section C, the exercises in Singing Intervals, Rhythms, Chords and sight-reading.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fundamental principles of harmony in music, a subject that has been explored by composers and theorists for centuries. The author challenges the traditional approach of studying harmony solely through mathematical calculations, emphasizing instead the importance of developing a musicianââ â¢s ability to "hear" written music. This book provides a comprehensive and practical guide for students to learn and apply harmonic principles, with a focus on three key areas: written work, harmonic dictation, and sight-singing. The book's approach is designed to foster a deeper understanding of harmony by connecting the theoretical aspects to the practical experience of playing and singing music. It utilizes exercises and examples to guide students in recognizing and applying the harmonic relationships between different notes and chords. Through this process, students are encouraged to develop an intuitive understanding of how chords resolve and create a sense of musical tension and release. The author's insights into the harmonic law and the melodic law, which govern the progression of chords and the movement of melodies, offer a unique perspective on the underlying structure and dynamics of music. Ultimately, this book offers a valuable resource for musicians seeking to elevate their understanding and appreciation of harmony, fostering a more comprehensive and engaging approach to musical study.
