Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is the first comedy written in English and is essential reading for any student of the period. The play's main themes surround the lively antics and ribald humor of the clown, Diccon the Bedlam. Through this mischievous character, the author presents a biting satire of life in 1500s rural England, where theft, suspicion, and domestic strife were part of everyday life. The central conflict arises when Gammer Gurton's prized possession, a sewing needle, is stolen. This pivotal event is quickly woven into a hilarious tale of mistaken identity, escalating tensions, suspicion, and marital discord, with the story evolving into a lively and compelling farce. The author creates a sharp yet affectionate portrayal of the period's social mores and superstitions, providing a fascinating window into the fabric of everyday life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
