Excerpt from The Elements of Logic, Adapted to the Capacity of Younger Students, and Designed for Academies and the Higher Classes of Common Schools, Vol. 1
Logic, as a science, is simple and limited. Most modern treatises upon the subject have erred, by extending it beyond its proper department, on the one hand, and by excluding it from its legitimate province on the other. By some it has been made to occupy the ground of mental science or of rhetoric; by others it has been denominated, "an art of reasoning," as if there were any sound reasoning which is not logical, while others have claimed for it the unlimited sphere of teaching "the right use of reason."

It is the science of distinguishing between sound and faulty arguments, teaching how to identify the different parts of an argument and demonstrating the rules that each must follow to be valid. The author provides numerous examples to illustrate these vital principles, making this book accessible to students and professionals alike. The field of logic has ancient roots, and this book positions the subject within its historical context. The author traces the development of logical principles from their early, intuitive use in everyday life through their formalization by Aristotle and other great thinkers.
