This book claims the study of logic should center on the actual workings of our own minds and the minds of others we know, as opposed to a priori laws of thought that may not exist independently of anything that exemplifies them. The author insists that logic needs to give an account of the search for truth, but that the main use of understanding is to help us get what we want in order to live. The author further argues that there is a non-sensuous element in understanding, that is, a cognition of form, or noesis, which is the essential element of understanding, and which is all-pervasive. This book defends interactionism, the doctrine of common sense, on which men have always acted in practical affairs. This, in turn, necessitates the adoption of the hypothesis of the soul, an extensive and complicated machine that manages the body. The author goes on to discuss the nature of understanding, the relation of understanding to other elements of the soul, and the process of understanding. This book concludes by arguing that the insights on the main subject of understanding are significant because they help us understand the processes of our own minds and the minds of persons whom we know.
