Complex values of the independent and dependent variables are excluded, but the subject matter includes the essentials of plane trigonometry and topics from advanced algebra, analytic geometry, and calculus. The approach of the author is to present a coherent analysis of the functions studied, which enables the student to comprehend the purpose of the course as a whole and the nature of the investigation of properties of functions of a given type. Emphasis is placed on characteristic properties which distinguish one class of functions from another. The course increases in difficulty with a corresponding increase in interest and gain in power on the part of the student. Questions of variability, average rate of change, and graphical representations are introduced. Trigonometric functions are treated at some length and several properties of exponential and logarithmic functions are developed. The book will be of interest not only to students of mathematics but also to those interested in the applications of mathematics to other fields.
