Excerpt from Twenty-Five Consecration Prayers: With Notes and Introduction
A widespread interest in the great liturgies has been aroused by the publication of the Anglican Eucharistic Prayer as revised by the Convocation of Canterbury; and this book attempts to present to those who are interested, but unlearned, in liturgical matters, the great Eucharistic Prayers of the Church, given in full, but with the Intercessions indicated only, the rubrics omitted, and the responses of Deacon and people inserted in brackets, so as to make more easy the comparison of each with the Anglican Prayer.
By the Eucharistic Prayer is meant the great central Prayer, of the Liturgy, which begins with the Sursum Corda and ends with the Doxology following the Invocation, or Invocation and Intercessions. This Prayer is fundamentally a unity, and though later teaching has concentrated attention upon this section or that as being the "form of consecration," such isolation of any portion of the Prayer is at variance with its nature.
Every Prayer of importance is included here, though only representatives could be given of the variable Gallican and Mozarabic Prayers, and of the multitudinous anaphoras of the Syrian Jacobites.
