Subject in Poetry, with a special relation to Contemporary Poetry. With your permission, ladies and gentlemen, I shall confine myself chiefly this afternoon to the first half of that topic and deal specially with emotional influence. I shall speak of change in subject, and the introduction of new subjects next week, though I cannot be certain that anybody who is here to-day will be here next week.
I suppose it is impossible - at any rate, I feel it to be impossible in surroundings with the scientific traditions of these - to enter upon a disquisition on any subject without, I won't say some attempt at definition, but, at any rate, some recognition that definitions exist, some reference to definition and I feel that I simply must begin, although I shall not go very far with that matter, by asking What is Poetry? And What is Subject?
