Excerpt from The Alphabet, Vol. 1 of 2: An Account of the Origin and Development of Letters

The typographic difficulties involved in the pro duction of these pages have been so formidable, that a word of acknowledgment is due to the skill and pains with which they have been overcome by my printers, Messrs. Gilbert and Rivington, who have placed at my disposal their collection of Oriental types, unrivalled probably by any private office, and excelled only by the Government establishments at Paris and Vienna.

Excerpt from The Alphabet, Vol. 1 of 2: An Account of the Origin and Development of Letters

This book represents the labour of many years. It was undertaken with the intention of compiling a brief account of recent discoveries as to the origin of the Alphabet, and its subsequent developments. Knowing how extensive was the literature of the subject, I did not suppose that there would be need or place for original research in connection with such a well-worn theme. It soon became manifest, however, not only that the History of the Alphabet had never been written, but that to some extent it had not even been discovered. Although many departments of the subject had been exhaustively discussed, I found that the origin of several important Alphabets would have to be investigated anew, while with regard to some of the best known scripts various collateral problems still awaited a solution. Such questions, arising one by one, necessitated unforseen and tedious investigation, the accumulation of many books, and the study of manuscripts and inscriptions in distant Libraries and Museums.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of the alphabet, tracing its evolution from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to the familiar letters we use today. The author argues that while many have studied specific aspects of the alphabet's development, a comprehensive and cohesive narrative has been missing. Recent archaeological discoveries and advancements in the field of palaeography have now made such a history possible. The book explores the challenges faced by early societies in developing writing systems, comparing the cumbersomeness of ideograms with the efficiency of the alphabet. It examines various non-alphabetic writing systems, including Chinese characters, Japanese syllabaries, and the cuneiform script of Mesopotamia, highlighting their limitations and complexities. The author emphasizes the crucial role played by the Phoenicians, who adapted Egyptian hieroglyphics to create a phonetic alphabet that spread throughout the Mediterranean world, ultimately giving rise to the Greek and Roman alphabets. The book also investigates the development of other writing systems, such as Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic, demonstrating the interconnectedness of alphabetic scripts across different cultures and historical periods. By illuminating the origins and historical trajectory of the alphabet, this book underscores its profound impact on human civilization, enabling the widespread dissemination of knowledge and paving the way for remarkable advancements in science, literature, and culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
