After all, however, the best commentary on Swift's life are his own letters and journals and occasional poems - and indeed, more or less, the whole body of his writings. Whoever can read these honestly and in their integrity, and can doubt the tenderness, the piety, the sinc'erity.

In the records of distinguished men who have done honour to their country, no name has been more a mark for slander and calumny, no career has been more misunderstood and misrepresented by prejudice and party rancour, than that of Jonathan Swift. Respecting the place of his birth, the events of his college career, his residence with Sir William Temple, his relations with two beautiful and accomplished women, the sincerity of his political and religious creed, and of his warmest personal friendships, charges and imputations have been preferred against him by successive biographers, critics, and gossip-mongers, as baseless and unfounded as they are at variance with each other. The ill-disguised contempt of Johnson, the more rancorous hatred of Jeffrey, and, later on, the brilliant but misplaced sarcasm and invective of Thackeray, have so far disguised for us the features of one of the noblest Englishmen of the last two centuries, that they have become scarcely recognizable.

The honest, if somewhat quaint, narrative of his life by Thomas Sheridan, the son of one of Swifts most cherished and talented personal friends, may therefore - shorn of a little of its garrulity - be reverted to with advantage, as in the main a trustworthy version of that touching and romantic story of the struggles, sorrows, and disappointments of genius.

After all, however, the best commentary on Swifts life are his own letters and journals and occasional poems - and indeed, more or less, the whole body of his writings.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the life and career of Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, satirist, political pamphleteer, and Anglican clergyman. Swift is widely regarded as perhaps the greatest prose satirist in the English language, with a career that spanned decades and witnessed some of Britain's most momentous historical events. The book follows Swift from his birth in 1667 to his death in 1745, exploring his early life, his friendships with influential figures of the time, such as Sir William Temple and Alexander Pope, and his complex relationships with women, in particular Esther Johnson ("Stella") and Esther Vanhomrigh ("Vanessa"). It examines his writings, including "A Tale of a Tub" and "Gulliver's Travels," which established him as a master of satire and a pioneer of science fiction, and analyzes their enduring legacy and influence on literature. The book also delves into the controversies surrounding Swift's political and religious views, his complex personality and mental health struggles, and his enduring legacy as one of the most significant figures in English literature. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9781330424568_0
