Excerpt from The Customs Union Question
Such is briefly my proposal for the outline of an Imperial Customs Union. It is not what I should like it to be, a Customs Union on the basis of free trade within the Empire, but it is in my judgment the nearest we can attain to it at present. I put this Imperial Free Trade before me as an ideal.
But on earth we must content ourselves with what is feasible and attainable, and cease crying for the moon, or losing solid advantages in the obstinate adherence to an abstract theory.
And now that I have unfolded my scheme, I shall endeavour to show how this scheme will be beneficial to this country and the Empire.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book proposes the formation of an Imperial Customs Union between Great Britain and the British Empire. The author believes that this union would revitalize domestic manufacturing, safeguard the interests of British agriculture, and strengthen the political bonds between the member nations through the spirit of shared economic opportunity. A Customs Union, the author argues, would allow the British Empire to form a powerful trading bloc capable of negotiating fair treatment for British goods in the international marketplace, and would help to alleviate the tax burden on British landowners. Both land and manufacturing concerns, which generate the true wealth of a nation, would see advantage under this proposal. The author sets his proposal within the context of the rise of protectionist policies in Europe and the United States, and argues that it is a measure necessary for Britain to remain competitive in this new economic landscape. Ultimately, the book posits that an Imperial Customs Union would make the British Empire more self-sufficient, more prosperous, and more globally influential.
