Excerpt from African and European Addresses: With an Introduction Presenting a Description of the Conditions Under Which the Addresses Were Given During Mr. Roosevelt's Journey in 1910 From Khartum Through Europe to New York

My original intention ha been to return to the United States direct from Africa, by the same route I took when going out. I altered this intention because of receiving from the Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord Curzon, an invitation to deliver the Romanes Lecture at Oxford. The Romanes Foundation had always greatly interested me, and I had been much struck by the general character of the annual addresses, so that I was glad to accept. Immediately afterwards, I received and accepted invitations to speak at the Sorbonne in Paris, and at the University of Berlin. In Berlin and at Oxford, my addresses were of a scholastic character, designed especially for the learned bodies which I was addressing, and for men who shared their interests in scientific and historical matters.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of speeches given by Theodore Roosevelt, an American president, orator, and writer, during his 1910 tour through Africa and Europe. It explores Roosevelt's versatility, with the author providing insights into Roosevelt's character, including his knack for incisively expressing his views, his lack of concern with oratory as an art form, and his preference for direct and persuasive prose. It features Roosevelt's speeches on diverse topics, including the importance of having a clear focus in dealing with far-away possessions, the ethical and economic benefits of maintaining order in Egypt, the virtues of a strong national defense, the value of peace coupled with justice when engaging with Sudan, and the principles of morality and human rights. The author concludes by asserting that Roosevelt's fervent moral precepts and his courage in expressing them made a lasting impact on the people he encountered. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
