Excerpt from The Greymare Romance
"I Daresay you think that as I am only a little donkey my opinion is not worth having," said a strange voice in my ear; adding, in an injured tone, "There, I knew it."
Between the first words and the last I had looked round for the speaker, and discovered that there was no human being visible. The time was near midnight. The place was Barnes Common. I was young, and unprosperously, though not quite hopelessly, in love. The weather was warm and cloudy.
