Excerpt from Criticism and the Old Testament: A Popular Introduction

To Professor G. A. Smith's Modern Criticism and the Preaching of the Old Testament,' I owe also a great deal, especially in Chapters IX and X. Indeed, it was the perusal of his fascinating pages, addressed primarily to preachers, which awakened in me, as one who has to occupy the pulpit, a desire to speak in writing to the occupant of the pew, and to show how criticism has enhanced the value of the Hebrew Scriptures. My debt to his lectures is both direct and indirect, though again I would say that my conclusions are not altogether to be laid to his charge. I have also utilised his commentary on Isaiah, in the Expositor's Bible.'

Reseña del editor

Excerpt from Criticism and the Old Testament: A Popular Introduction

'The critical study of the Bible by competent scholars is essential to the maintenance in the Church of a healthy faith. That faith is already in serious danger which refuses to face questions that may be raised either on the authority or the genuineness of any part of the Scriptures that have come down to us. Such refusal creates a painful suspicion in the minds of many whom we have to teach, and will weaken the strength of our own conviction of the truth that God has revealed to us. A faith which is always or often attended by a secret fear that we dare not inquire, lest inquiry should lead us to results inconsistent with what we believe, is already infected with a disease which may soon destroy it.'

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the rise and development of biblical criticism, with a focus on the Old Testament. The author explains how the Bible came to be written and how modern scholarship has uncovered the diverse origins of its texts. By examining both Testaments, the book reveals how the Old Testament texts were brought together and explores the relationship between the two. The author unpacks the concept of inspiration and the impact of criticism on understanding miracles, prophecy, and messianic hopes. In the end, this thought-provoking book argues that the work of biblical criticism has enriched our understanding of the Bible and its enduring relevance.
