One day in October Evelyn was solacing herself for the prospect of a long, uncongenial afternoon without the child, by herself dressing Bessy for a visit to her godmother. Each button, each knot of ribbon, was an apology for a snatched kiss, sudden, swift, and tender as a lover's.
